Sintered Metal (Kasho/KAI)
Description
Sintered Metal is KAI's proprietary powder-compacted steel for Kasho scissors. Ultra-uniform grain structure for consistent, sharp professional edges.
Sintered Metal (焼結金属)
Quick look
- Composition: Proprietary sintered metal alloy developed by KAI Corporation (貝印) for the Kasho professional scissors line.
- Toughness: Sintering process produces an extremely fine, uniform grain structure with high resistance to edge micro-fracture.
- Corrosion profile: Stainless-grade formulation maintains salon-level corrosion resistance.
- Weight/feel: Fine-grained sintered blank allows precise weight control during grinding; balanced, refined closure.
Manufacturing process — powder compaction and sintering
Sintered metal (焼結金属 / shōketsu kinzoku) follows a different manufacturing path from both conventional cast steel and standard powder metallurgy. Metal powder is compacted under high pressure into a near-net-shape blank, then heated to just below the melting point in a controlled atmosphere furnace. This sintering process (焼結) bonds the particles through solid-state diffusion rather than melting, preserving the ultra-fine grain structure of the original powder. The result is a blank with extremely uniform microstructure—no segregation, no large carbide clusters, and no casting porosity. KAI Corporation (貝印), headquartered in Seki City (関市)—the world capital of professional shears—developed this process specifically for their premium Kasho line.
Why it matters
The distinction between sintered metal and standard PM steels is subtle but significant. Where conventional PM involves melting and gas atomization followed by hot isostatic pressing, sintering bonds powder without a full liquid phase. This preserves an even finer grain structure and can produce blanks with properties difficult to achieve through either casting or standard PM routes. For scissors, the practical benefit is an edge that is simultaneously sharp, stable, and consistent along its entire length—no hard spots, no soft spots, no hidden inclusions waiting to chip out.
Kasho Millennium Series (KML)
KAI deploys sintered metal in their Kasho Millennium Series (KML), positioned as the pinnacle of the Kasho professional range. The Millennium Series combines the sintered metal blade with KAI’s precision grinding and finishing expertise developed over decades of razor blade and professional tool manufacturing in Seki City.
Shear pairing & edge compatibility
- Kasho Millennium convex shears: Sintered metal is purpose-matched to these flagship models with full convex edge geometry.
- Precision cutting tools: The uniform grain supports extremely fine edge angles for detail-oriented cutting work.
Technique map
- Precision dry cutting and finishing work where edge consistency along the full blade length affects the cut quality.
- Slide cutting and point work that demands a smooth, snag-free blade surface.
- High-end salon environments where Kasho’s reputation and KAI’s Seki City heritage carry weight with discerning clients.
Real-world stress tests
- Edge retention: The fine sintered grain structure produces extended edge life comparable to top-tier PM steels. Exact performance depends on the specific sintered alloy composition, which KAI does not publish.
- Impact/drop resilience: Fine grain and controlled porosity give reasonable toughness, but as with any high-performance steel, tip protection is essential.
- Weight & in-hand feel: KAI’s grinding expertise produces a refined, balanced feel that complements the sintered blank’s uniform density.
Maintenance notes
Standard professional care: wipe and dry after each client, oil pivots weekly, store in padded cases. When sharpening is needed, use a technician familiar with fine-grained PM and sintered steels. KAI’s global service network can direct owners to qualified sharpeners.
Industry snapshot
- Kasho / KAI Corporation (貝印): Sintered metal is exclusive to the Kasho Millennium Series, manufactured at KAI’s Seki City facilities with full in-house control over the sintering process.
Trade-offs
- Proprietary to KAI/Kasho—no third-party availability or cross-brand use.
- KAI does not publish detailed composition data, making independent metallurgical comparison difficult.
- Premium pricing reflects the specialized manufacturing process and Kasho’s flagship positioning.
- Limited information available in English; much of the technical detail is in Japanese-language trade materials.
