Utsumi was founded in 1987 by Chimaki Utsumi, often known as Mr. Tenyo in Japan. It was the first shear manufacturer to use Computer Numerical Controlled (CNC) technology in professional production. Its 1994 double-bladed thinning shear and UMIX MX Damascus line followed that manufacturing approach.
