Frequently Asked Questions
How does the Juntetsu Night compare to the VG10 Offset?
Both use Takefu VG-10 steel at 60-62 HRC. The Night has a black PVD coating and is available in slightly different sizes (5.25, 5.75, 6.75 vs the Offset's full range). The Night is priced lower, making it a good entry into Juntetsu's VG-10 lineup.
What is the black coating made of and does it wear off?
The Night carries over 50 layers of premium allergy-neutral black coating applied via Physical Vapor Deposition (PVD) or electroplating. PVD forms a metallurgically bonded surface rather than a painted layer, so it resists chipping and wear through years of daily salon use. The coating is specifically formulated to be allergy-neutral for client skin contact.
Is VG-10 at 60-62 HRC worth the price step up from 440C?
VG-10 contains 1% carbon, 15% chromium, 1% molybdenum, 0.2% vanadium, and 1.5% cobalt. At 60-62 HRC it forms fine vanadium carbides during cryogenic heat treatment that hold a razor edge longer than 440C's 58-60 HRC. If you're cutting daily and value longer intervals between sharpenings, VG-10 is the upgrade; if you're occasional-use or starting out, 440C is fine.
