Description
Type 4A is a visual pattern label for small, visibly defined coils. Use it as communication vocabulary, then assess the client's actual spring-back, condition, density, and goals.
Defined Coily Hair (Type 4A)
Quick look
- Visual vocabulary: Small, visibly defined coils in common modern charts
- Not encoded by 4A: Porosity, density, fragility, ethnicity, shrinkage, or tool choice
- Useful observation: Visible grouping can support pattern-led sectioning when that matches the design
- Control step: Measure spring-back on the client and recheck after releasing tension
Why it matters
The code offers a quick way to discuss visible pattern, but it is not a biological diagnosis or service prescription. Two clients labelled 4A can differ in density, fibre diameter, porosity, weathering, chemical or heat history, grouping, and spring-back. Mixed patterns on one head are common.
Client-specific checks
| Observe | Why it changes the plan |
|---|---|
| Intended worn state | Establishes where length and silhouette must be judged |
| Natural, wet, and stretched length | Reveals this client’s spring-back instead of using a fixed percentage |
| Density and distribution | Shows where weight is present rather than inferring it from the curl code |
| Fibre condition | Existing knots, breakage, weathering, and chemical/heat history change manipulation tolerance |
| Grouping and mixed zones | Determines whether curl-by-curl, panel, or combined sectioning fits the design |
Technique and tool choices
- Pattern-led dusting or curl-by-curl shaping can preserve visible grouping when that is the goal.
- Wet structural work, stretched cutting, and staged wet/dry methods can also be valid. Use consistent tension and verify the result in the intended worn state.
- Select a sharp, maintained shear for the actual motion. A convex edge, blender, razor, or dry-only process is an option within a trained method, not a requirement of 4A.
- If weight removal is planned, base it on measured density and the exact tool’s behaviour. No curl code supplies a safe tooth count or cut rate.
Service notes
Product, detangling method, clips, drying method, and at-home routine should follow the client’s condition, sensitivities, styling practice, and product instructions. Set the next service from the shape, ends, growth, and goals; there is no universal six-to-eight-week 4A interval.

Context and comparison
4A is generally drawn with more visibly defined coil units than neighbouring 4B descriptions. That visual distinction can help communication, but it does not make 4A universally easier, safer, less shrinkage-prone, or a required first step in a training sequence. Measure the individual client.

Frequently Asked Questions
3 answers you can open one at a timeWhat does the 4A label tell a stylist?
It is commonly used for small, visibly defined coils. It does not establish porosity, density, fragility, ethnicity, a fixed spring factor, or a shrinkage percentage. Observe mixed zones and measure the client’s actual wet, stretched, and natural behaviour.
What scissors work best for 4A hair?
No edge, steel, tooth count, or nominal size is biologically required by 4A. Choose a sharp, correctly adjusted tool for the planned line or texture method, fit, section control, and the client’s fibre condition.
What techniques are recommended for 4A hair?
Pattern-led dusting or curl-by-curl shaping can preserve visible grouping, while wet or stretched structural methods can serve other goals. Standardize tension, cut conservatively, release the section, and verify it in the intended worn state.
