About Ohka
Ohka is a Taiwanese professional scissor brand founded in 1999, headquartered in Taichung City. The brand operates under two names: Ohka for Europe and the Americas, and Ohka Sakura for Asian markets. All scissors are handmade in Taiwan and go through quality testing before shipping.
The brand’s origin story involves a well known Taiwanese hairstylist whose scissors were damaged. After searching for someone who could repair them, he found a master scissors maker in Taichung who restored the shears. That collaboration led to a business partnership, and the Ohka brand was born.
Product Range
Ohka produces cutting scissors, thinning scissors, and left-handed scissors. Their thinning shears come in multiple volume reduction levels: 10%, 15%, and 25%. They also make models suited for blunt cut, slide cut, point cut, and general texture control work.
Each pair of scissors goes through what the company describes as rigorous quality testing. Ohka states that their scissors are used by stylists worldwide.
Awards
Ohka has won the Taiwan Excellence Award for three consecutive years. This award is run by Taiwan’s Ministry of Economic Affairs and evaluates products on R&D, design, quality, and marketing. Winning requires the product to be manufactured in Taiwan.
Market Positioning
Ohka sits in the mid range price tier. For American stylists, the brand is available through retailers including Yoi Scissors and Chris & Sons in the UK, and through the Ohka website directly. The fact that these are handmade in Taiwan rather than Japan or Germany puts them in a less crowded segment of the market.
Stylists looking for handmade shears at a mid range price point may find Ohka worth considering, particularly if they want thinning scissors with specific removal percentages.
