Crowds at the annual Seki Cutlery Festival in Gifu Prefecture

Seki Cutlery Festival 2014: Record Attendance for Scissor Workshops

The 2014 Seki City Cutlery Festival (関刃物まつり) has wrapped up with reports of record attendance for its scissor-specific workshop sessions. What was historically a knife-dominated event is increasingly drawing professional stylists and scissor enthusiasts from across Japan and beyond.

Growing International Interest

The festival, organised by the Gifu Prefectural Seki Cutlery Industry Association (岐阜県関刃物産業連合会 / Gifu-ken Seki Hamono Sangyo Rengoukai), has always been a major draw for knife collectors and culinary professionals. But in recent years, the scissor-related programming has expanded considerably, reflecting both the economic importance of scissors to Seki’s manufacturing base and growing international curiosity about Japanese scissor production.

This year’s scissor workshops covered topics including convex edge sharpening techniques, an introduction to the bungyosei (division of labour) production system, and hands-on sessions where attendees could try scissors from multiple Seki manufacturers side by side.

International attendees — particularly from Australia, the UK, and the United States — made up a noticeable portion of the workshop participants. For many, the festival represents the first opportunity to see inside the production ecosystem that supplies a significant portion of the world’s premium professional scissors.

Seki by the Numbers

The scale of Seki’s cutlery industry is sometimes difficult to grasp from outside Japan. Over 100 cutlery manufacturers operate within the city, producing knives, scissors, nail clippers, grooming tools, and industrial cutting instruments. The city’s output is not limited to premium handmade products — Seki also produces enormous volumes of mid-range and consumer-grade cutlery for domestic and export markets.

For professional scissors specifically, Seki houses the workshops and factories behind many of the brands that Western stylists encounter through distributors. The gap between the Seki factory price and the international retail price is often substantial, which partly explains the growing interest in visiting the festival and purchasing directly.

Planning a Visit

The Seki Cutlery Festival is held annually in October. For anyone considering attending, the combination of factory-direct pricing, the ability to handle products from dozens of manufacturers, and the educational workshops makes it one of the most worthwhile industry events on the calendar. The main venues — Seki Cutlery Hall, the surrounding factory shops, and the outdoor market stalls — are walkable within a compact area of the city centre.

Accommodation in Seki itself is limited, so most visitors base themselves in nearby Gifu City or Nagoya and travel in by train.
