About UTSUMI
Greeting Since our founding, UTSUMI has advanced product development with the themes of “Always scientifically approaching scissors” and “Creating tools with people in mind.” From our early days when handmade scissors were the norm, we pioneered the industry by introducing CNC grinding machines to ensure consistent quality and offer affordable pricing to our customers. In an era when thinning shears were primarily used in barbershops for summer hair volume adjustment, we launched the “Let’s Use Thinning Shears” campaign to promote their use in beauty salons for finishing cuts and design cuts. This helped many stylists recognize the convenience of thinning shears and successfully expanded their range of applications. UTSUMI was also the first in the industry to introduce the now-standard classification by “cutting rate.” At the same time, while embracing new technologies, we’ve maintained Japan’s traditional blade-making heritage by passing down the “Chaku-ko” (blade fusion) technique to our young craftsmen. Now, having passed our 30th anniversary of incorporation and looking toward 40 and 50 years, we remain true to UTSUMI’s philosophy: “We spare no effort in creating convenient and user-friendly companies, people, and tools for our customers.” We deliver comfortable scissors with pride as craftsmen, carefully and rigorously crafting each pair while envisioning the joy and excitement that comes from cutting. Needless to say, our foundation remains our unwavering commitment to serving salons and technicians since our founding. Our entire staff promises to be of service to you. Please look forward to UTSUMI’s future. UTSUMI Scissors: Japanese Precision Engineering
UTSUMI is a prestigious Japanese scissor manufacturer established in 1987, specializing in high-performance haircutting tools with a focus on innovative technical specifications. The company has developed a unique approach to scissor classification through their proprietary "Slide Percentage" system, which revolutionized how stylists select tools for different cutting techniques. With manufacturing facilities in Osaka and distribution extending to international markets including a dedicated U.S. office, UTSUMI maintains Japan's traditional blade-making craftsmanship while introducing modern engineering concepts.
Key Features & Offerings:
- Specialized "Slide Rate" technology (10-90% range) for technique-specific performance
- SLIDE CONTROL series with models optimized for specific cutting styles
- Premium Japanese steel with traditional "Chigane" forging technique
- Ergonomic 3D handles designed for professional comfort
- Price point around ¥74,800 (approximately $500-550 USD) for professional models
- Membership program with points system and free trial periods
What Makes Them Special:
- Scientifically-developed blade geometry for different techniques
- Innovative classification system making scissor selection intuitive
- Three distinct categories: Base-cutting (20% slide), All-round (60% slide), and Dry-cutting (80% slide)
- Balance between traditional craftsmanship and modern engineering
- 30+ years of industry innovation and technical development
Personal observation: Having worked with dozens of scissor brands over the years, UTSUMI's slide rate concept is genuinly game-changing. For stylsts who specialize in both precision and textural work, the ability to quickly switch between a 20% slide for precision base cuts and an 80% for texturizing without changing technique is incredible. I remeber struggling with slide techniques on conventional shears before discovering these - the 80% models completely transformed </div>
